When bad films inspire brilliant real-life ideas.
I watched the rom-com Holiday with Jude Law and Cameron Diaz long ago. I doubt that the film stayed in my mind for any cinematic reasons, but the idea of swapping houses with someone from the other part of the world seemed brilliant. It was fun to learn that Debbie Waskow, the founder of Love Home Swap, took her inspiration from the same movie and her holiday - where she spent a lot of money on an expensive hotel while her house in London was unused and empty.
Love Home Swap is one of my favourite services that makes it possible and secure to exchange houses with other people worldwide. And, what is excellent, the exchange does not need to be direct. You can either simultaneously swap homes and go to someone's place when they stay at your house or do a non-simultaneous swap if that better suits your schedule. You can also do a nondirect exchange thanks to points, the service's currency and cash out the issues someone pays you for staying at your place by redeeming these points for a place in time and place that suits you best.
We had some lovely people staying at our house from Bali and Maiorca, and we have accumulated enough points to have free accommodation somewhere in the world for a month.
In 2017 Waskow sold the service for £53 million, and now it only grows to have more users, more destinations and more connections. My app idea, KIIN, allowing people to share their skills, was inspired by this service as I am convinced that sharing economy is the way to move forward.
